Description: College English professor Richard Brown receives devastating news from his doctor: he has advanced-stage lung cancer that has spread throughout his body, giving him a life expectancy of six months without treatment or 12–18 months with aggressive, painful therapy. Overwhelmed by the diagnosis, Richard struggles emotionally, lashing out at himself and wandering through town and campus in a daze.
At home, during dinner with his wife, Veronica, and daughter, Olivia, Richard plans to share his dire prognosis. However, the conversation takes unexpected turns. Olivia reveals she is a lesbian and has a partner, but Veronica dismisses it as a phase, causing Olivia to leave the table upset. Meanwhile, Veronica confronts Richard about their strained marriage, admitting she has taken a lover—the dean of the college where Richard teaches. Amid the arguments, Richard never discloses his medical crisis, instead joking about overcooking the steaks.
The next day, Richard returns to campus, urging his students to live life fully. He critiques stereotypes he observes in the classroom and begins removing students he believes are solely seeking easy grades or superficial benefits from the faculty.
