Description: In 1926 New Orleans, Tiana is deeply committed to opening her own restaurant, a dream she shared with her late father, who passed away during World War I. She works tirelessly as a waitress at two jobs to save money for this goal, leaving little time for a social life. Meanwhile, Prince Naveen of Maldonia arrives in New Orleans. Cut off financially, he plans to marry a wealthy Southern belle, such as Tiana’s best friend, Charlotte La Bouff. Charlotte’s father, Eli “Big Daddy” La Bouff, hosts a masquerade ball in Naveen’s honor, where Charlotte hires Tiana to make beignets, offering her enough money to purchase an old mill for her restaurant.
Naveen and his valet, Lawrence, encounter Dr. Facilier, a voodoo witch doctor, who deceives them with a fake fortune reading. He transforms Naveen into a frog and uses a talisman with Naveen’s blood to make Lawrence look like the prince. Facilier’s plan is for Lawrence to marry Charlotte and then use a voodoo doll to kill her father, seizing the La Bouff fortune.
At the ball, Tiana learns she has been outbid for the mill by the Fenner Brothers. Heartbroken, she wishes on the evening star for her dream to come true. She then meets Naveen in frog form, who believes she is a princess and asks for a kiss to break the spell. Tiana reluctantly agrees after Naveen promises to fund her restaurant, but instead, she turns into a frog as well, not being a true princess. The two flee into the bayou, where they meet Louis, a trumpet-playing alligator who dreams of playing jazz. After discovering they are humans under a voodoo spell, Louis suggests they seek help from Mama Odie, a voodoo practitioner living in the bayou. Together, they set out to find her.
