**Storyline:**
In 1890s London, Robert Angier and Alfred Borden work as assistants for a magician under the guidance of John Cutter, an engineer who creates stage illusions. During a water tank trick, Angier’s wife Julia tragically drowns when she fails to escape. Devastated, Angier blames Borden for using a riskier knot, leading to her death. When Angier questions Borden about the knot, Borden claims ignorance. This incident sparks a bitter rivalry between the two.
Both Angier and Borden pursue their own careers in magic. Angier collaborates with Cutter, while Borden partners with a mysterious figure named Fallon. Their feud escalates: Angier sabotages Borden’s performance by placing a real bullet in his pistol during a bullet-catch trick, causing Borden to lose two fingers. In retaliation, Borden ruins Angier’s disappearing bird act, resulting in the death of the bird and injury to an audience volunteer.
Borden invents a groundbreaking trick called “The Transported Man,” where he seemingly teleports between two wardrobes on stage. Unable to uncover Borden’s secret, Angier hires a double, Gerald Root, to replicate the trick. While the imitation succeeds, Angier feels unfulfilled as Root receives the applause while he remains hidden beneath the stage.
Angier sends his assistant Olivia to spy on Borden, but she falls in love with Borden and becomes his ally. With her help, Borden sabotages Angier’s act, leaving him severely injured. Confronted by Angier, Olivia gives him Borden’s encoded diary, which Angier deciphers using the keyword “TESLA.”
The diary leads Angier to America, where he seeks out the scientist Nikola Tesla, believing he built a machine for Borden. Angier discovers the diary is a decoy, but Tesla constructs a machine for him nonetheless. Instead of teleportation, the machine duplicates anything placed inside it.
