StoryLine:
In the 1950s, following the Korean War, a humble wandering piper named Woo-ryong, who has a limp, and his ailing young son, Young-nam, are traveling on foot to Seoul through the central Korean highlands. Along the way, they arrive at a remote village. The village chief allows them to stay at his house. Woo-ryong shows the chief a note written in English, claiming it contains the name of an American doctor in Seoul who can treat his son. The chief, who advises Woo-ryong not to reveal that the war has ended, agrees to help but also admits he cannot read English. During their stay, Woo-ryong becomes drawn to a villager named Mi-sook, who lost her husband and child in the war.
Woo-ryong soon discovers that the village is infested with rats that show no fear of humans and are unaffected by traps or poisons. The chief explains that he and the villagers fled to this area upon hearing rumors of approaching Chinese soldiers. Before leaving, they had hidden the village lepers and the shaman in a cave. When the villagers returned after the threat subsided, they found the lepers dead and being devoured by rats. The aggressive rodents later invaded the village because it lacked a shaman to repel them.
In exchange for the cost of a pig, which would fund his son’s medical treatment, Woo-ryong offers to rid the village of the rats. He spreads a special powder across the village and climbs a nearby hill, where he starts a smoky fire after checking the wind direction. The billowing smoke engulfs the village while Mi-sook, who has been forced by the chief to become the new shaman, begins a purification ritual with bells. The rats, drawn by the powder, begin streaming out of the buildings and toward a cave.
As Woo-ryong’s kindness becomes evident, Mi-sook starts developing feelings for him, and Young-nam even begins calling her “mother.” However, the chief threatens Mi-sook if she considers leaving the village. Meanwhile, he conspires with his son, Nam-soo, to cheat Woo-ryong of his promised reward for eliminating the rats.
