**Plot Summary:**
During a soccer match between France and China, the French coach Yves Gluant arrives wearing the valuable Pink Panther diamond ring and publicly embraces his girlfriend, pop star Xania. After France secures victory in sudden death, Gluant is tragically killed by a poison dart, and the Pink Panther ring goes missing.
In an effort to earn the prestigious Légion d’honneur, Chief Inspector Charles Dreyfus promotes the bumbling and clumsy officer Jacques Clouseau to inspector and assigns him to the case. While Clouseau attracts media attention, Dreyfus secretly forms a team to solve the mystery, assigning Gendarme Gilbert Ponton to monitor Clouseau. Clouseau befriends Ponton and develops feelings for secretary Nicole Durant.
A prime suspect emerges in the form of Bizu, a French soccer player who accused Gluant of “stealing” Xania. However, Bizu is soon found shot in the head in the locker room. While investigating at a casino, Clouseau encounters MI6 agent Nigel Boswell, who foils a robbery while wearing Clouseau’s trench coat. Clouseau mistakenly receives credit for the heroic act and is nominated for the Légion d’honneur.
Clouseau and Ponton follow Xania to New York City. Ponton suspects her involvement due to Gluant’s infidelity, but Clouseau believes she is innocent, though her behavior suggests she knows more than she’s revealing. The poison used to kill Gluant is traced to Chinese herbs, leading Dreyfus to suspect Dr. Pang, a Chinese envoy who had dealings with Gluant.
In a plot to discredit Clouseau, Dreyfus arranges for his bag to be swapped with one containing weapons at the airport. Clouseau is arrested for attempting to smuggle hamburgers onto the flight and becomes a public embarrassment upon his return to France. Dreyfus demotes Clouseau and plans to arrest Dr. Pang publicly during the Presidential Ball, where Xania is set to perform.
