**Storyline:**
As a child in Lugash, Princess Dala receives a precious gift from her father, the Maharajah: the “Pink Panther,” the largest diamond in the world. This remarkable pink gem has a unique flaw—a tiny discoloration resembling a leaping panther when viewed closely. When the new government declares the diamond property of the people, the World Court is asked to decide its ownership. However, Princess Dala refuses to give it up.
During a luxurious holiday at a ski resort in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Dala crosses paths with Sir Charles Lytton (David Niven), a charming English playboy who secretly leads a double life as a notorious jewel thief known as “the Phantom.” Sir Charles has his sights set on the Pink Panther. Meanwhile, his brash American nephew, George (Robert Wagner), unexpectedly arrives at the resort. George, a gambler drowning in debt, pretends to be a recent college graduate joining the Peace Corps to keep his uncle’s financial support flowing.
On the Phantom’s trail is the bumbling French detective Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Peter Sellers). Unbeknownst to him, his wife Simone (Capucine) is having an affair with Sir Charles and has been profiting as the Phantom’s fence. As Simone navigates her secret life, she avoids both her husband and George, who sets his sights on seducing her.
Sir Charles develops genuine feelings for Princess Dala, making him hesitant about stealing the diamond. However, George accidentally uncovers his uncle’s criminal activities.
The story reaches its climax during a costume party at Dala’s villa in Rome. Both Sir Charles and George attempt to steal the Pink Panther, only to discover it’s already missing. Inspector Clouseau arrives at the scene, but chaos ensues during a fireworks display, allowing the thieves to escape.
