Description: Charlotte Willmore, a gifted cellist, had to abandon her studies at the prestigious Bachoff music school in Boston to take care of her terminally ill mother. Years after her mother’s passing, Charlotte reconnects with Anton, the school’s director, and travels to Shanghai to assist him, his wife Paloma, and their colleagues in selecting a new student. There, she befriends Lizzie, Anton’s star pupil who had taken Charlotte’s place at Bachoff. After a night of partying, the two return to Lizzie’s hotel room and share an intimate moment.
The following morning, Lizzie wakes up with a hangover, and Charlotte offers her ibuprofen, which Lizzie takes with alcohol. They embark on a journey through rural China. However, after eating street food and boarding a bus, Lizzie begins to feel increasingly unwell. She takes more of the medication Charlotte gave her, but her condition deteriorates rapidly. She vomits maggots and descends into panic, alarming the bus passengers until the driver forces her and Charlotte off the vehicle, leaving them stranded.
As Lizzie’s condition worsens, she begins hallucinating, believing bugs are crawling beneath her skin and bursting out. In a moment of desperation, Charlotte hands her a meat cleaver, and Lizzie amputates her own infected hand.
It is later revealed that Charlotte had secretly drugged Lizzie with medication from her late mother’s prescription, which causes severe hallucinations, especially when mixed with alcohol. She had also stolen the cleaver from the food stall and manipulated Lizzie into mutilating herself.
Three weeks later, Anton and Paloma introduce their new student, Zhang Li, to Bachoff and the “Chapel,” a perfectly acoustic room where the school’s top performers showcase their talent.
