Description: Brooks Rattigan is a high school senior with aspirations of attending Yale, while his father, Charlie, wants him to accept a full scholarship offer from the University of Connecticut. To support his dreams, Brooks works at a sub shop alongside his best friend, Murph, a programmer. Struggling to finance his education, Brooks sees an opportunity to make extra money by pretending to be the boyfriend of Celia Lieberman, the wealthy cousin of his classmate.
Brooks discovers he has a natural talent for dating due to his adaptable personality. He meets Shelby, an attractive but snobbish girl, and sets his sights on winning her over. However, Celia misleads Shelby by claiming Brooks is from Darien instead of his true working-class background in Bridgeport.
Seizing the opportunity, Brooks and Murph create an app where Brooks offers himself as a plus-one for various occasions. When Brooks learns Celia has feelings for Franklin Volley, they devise a plan to stage a fake breakup, allowing Brooks to pursue Shelby while Celia gets closer to Franklin. As Brooks’ app gains popularity, Murph feels ignored and distances himself from Brooks.
Celia arranges an interview for Brooks at Yale but is disappointed when she discovers he researched the Dean beforehand and lied to make a good impression. Brooks defends his actions, arguing it’s no different from what he’s been doing with his app. Later, Celia realizes Franklin isn’t the right match for her but doesn’t share this with Brooks. During their staged breakup, Celia is hurt by Brooks’ words and slaps him, though he believes it’s all part of the act.
After the breakup, Shelby kisses Brooks and invites him to her school formal. However, their differences make it difficult to connect, and their conversation quickly falters. At the event, Brooks encounters Leah, a girl who used his app to practice dating. Leah exposes the truth about Brooks’ app to Shelby, who is shocked and disgusted by its concept. Brooks admits to Shelby that he’s not from a wealthy background and needs the money for Yale. Shelby accuses him of lying and walks away.
