He partners with Edgar Allan Poe, a young cadet, to solve the case. As the probe deepens, Augustus and Edgar uncover a possible connection to sorcery and witchcraft. A second cadet is killed in a similar manner, and a third, linked to the first two, vanishes, fearing he might be the next victim. Their search leads them to Dr. Daniel Marquis and his family. Suspicion falls on Dr. Marquis’s son, Artemus, a fellow cadet, and his daughter, Lea, who suffers from seizures and is revealed to have dabbled in dark magic.
Edgar becomes entangled with Lea, only to discover her sinister intentions. He awakens to find himself part of a ritual where Lea and Artemus attempt to cut out his heart, believing it will cure her condition. Augustus arrives just in time to save Edgar, while Lea and Artemus meet their demise in a house fire caused by falling beams.
