Description: The Outpost, released in 2019, is a gripping war drama set during the conflict in Afghanistan. The story follows SSG Romesha and a team of soldiers stationed at PRT Kamdesh under the command of CPT Keating. Early on, SGT Scusa rescues a dog from being shot, and the unit faces repeated Taliban attacks. Tensions rise as SSG Gallegos confronts PFC Yunger for firing too close to his head, while SGT Larson reprimands SPC Carter for arguing during combat. Keating organizes a shura, offering local elders financial support for infrastructure projects in exchange for peace. However, a gunshot residue test reveals a local man’s involvement in a recent attack, though he and others surrender their weapons. Tragedy strikes when Keating attempts to drive an LMTV through treacherous mountain roads; the vehicle plummets off a cliff, resulting in his death.
The new commander, CPT Yllescas, takes charge and sends out a patrol following another attack. Romesha outlines a strategy to defend the vulnerable outpost. SGT Kirk captures a local man hired to photograph the base, leading Yllescas to withhold the promised funds. Mohammed, the base’s interpreter, warns of a large-scale attack, but his concerns are ignored. While patrolling a bridge, Yllescas is killed by a bomb, leaving Yunger traumatized. Romesha intervenes to prevent Yunger’s suicide, and both are evacuated along with Yllescas’ body.
CPT Broward assumes command and reveals the base will soon be closed. Evidence pointing to the bomber’s identity is discovered, but Broward denies Romesha’s request to search nearby villages. Romesha clashes with Broward over the strict adherence to rules of engagement, and pressure from Afghan President Karzai delays the base’s closure. Carter voices the men’s concerns about Broward’s leadership to 1LT Bundermann but is met with resistance.
