**Storyline:**
In 1945, during the aftermath of World War II, Grace Stewart lives in a remote country house on Jersey, a Channel Island previously occupied by the Germans. She resides with her two young children, Anne and Nicholas, who suffer from a rare condition that makes them highly sensitive to light, possibly xeroderma pigmentosum. Grace hires three new servants: Mrs. Bertha Mills, the housekeeper; Edmund Tuttle, the gardener; and Lydia, a mute girl. Mrs. Mills reveals she once worked in the same house years earlier.
As strange occurrences begin to unfold, Grace becomes increasingly uneasy, suspecting the presence of unseen “others” in the house. Anne claims to have seen a group of people—a man, a woman, an old woman, and a boy named Victor—who insist the house belongs to them. Grace hears unexplained footsteps and voices, prompting her to search the house. There, she discovers a 19th-century photo album containing mourning portraits. When questioned, Mrs. Mills mentions that many former residents left due to a tuberculosis outbreak.
One night, Grace witnesses a piano playing on its own, convincing her the house is haunted. Desperate, she seeks the local priest to bless the house. Before leaving, Grace instructs Tuttle to investigate a nearby cemetery for a grave belonging to a child named Victor. Tuttle finds the cemetery but covers the gravestones at Mrs. Mills’ request, who assures him Grace will soon understand the truth.
Outside, Grace encounters her husband, Charles, who she believed had died in the war. Charles briefly reunites with his family but remains distant. Later, Grace checks on Anne, only to find an old woman on the floor wearing her daughter’s communion dress, adding to her growing terror.
