Description: The Oscars 2023 marked a historic 95th Academy Awards ceremony. The nominations were unveiled by actors Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams on January 24, 2023. For the first time, the Best Picture category included two sequels—Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick—both of which had grossed over $1 billion worldwide. This was also the first occasion where two billion-dollar films competed against each other for Best Picture. All Quiet on the Western Front received nine nominations, ranking it behind only Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Roma (2018) as the most-nominated non-English-language film. Additionally, The Quiet Girl made history as Ireland’s first nominee for Best International Feature Film.
The acting categories saw a record-breaking 16 first-time Oscar nominees, including all five Best Actor contenders. Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian-identifying woman nominated for Best Actress. Four Asian actors—Hong Chau, Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, and Yeoh—were recognized with nominations, setting another milestone. Angela Bassett earned a place in history as the first actor nominated for a role in a Marvel Comics-based film for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Judd Hirsch, nominated for Best Supporting Actor for The Fabelmans, set a record for the longest gap between two nominations, following his nod for Ordinary People in 1980. At 90 years old, John Williams became the oldest competitive nominee in Oscar history. This was his 53rd nomination, further cementing his position as the most Oscar-nominated living person and the second-most nominated individual overall, behind Walt Disney.
