Description: Set in the fictional town of Oakton City during the late 1950s, “The Nut Job” follows Surly, a cunning squirrel voiced by Will Arnett, and his silent rat partner, Buddy. Living as outcasts in Liberty Park due to their thieving ways, they find themselves at odds with a group of animals led by Raccoon (Liam Neeson) and his trusted cardinal assistant. As winter approaches, the animals face a food shortage, prompting a competition for survival.
Compassionate squirrel Andie (Katherine Heigl) and the boastful Grayson (Brendan Fraser) clash with Surly and Buddy while scavenging from a nut cart. The cart is run by Lucky and Fingers, who are secretly plotting a bank heist. Their plans unravel when Fingers’ pug, Precious, accidentally causes a propane tank explosion, destroying the animals’ food supply. Surly is banished from the park as a result.
In the city, Surly and Buddy stumble upon Maury’s Nut Shop, which serves as a front for Lucky, Fingers, and their boss, Percy “King” Dimpleweed (Stephen Lang), recently released from prison. The gang plans to break into the adjacent bank, replacing cash with nuts. King’s girlfriend, Lana, believes he has turned over a new leaf, unaware of his criminal activities.
Raccoon sends Andie and Grayson to the city to find food, but they encounter trouble when separated by a street rat. Andie discovers a dog whistle that Surly had used against Precious and offers to return it in exchange for a share of the nuts Surly plans to steal. Surly agrees and inadvertently befriends Precious. Andie informs the park community of Surly’s plan, and Raccoon reluctantly agrees to support it, though he secretly intends to sabotage the heist to maintain control over the food supply and his leadership. Surly uncovers Raccoon’s deceit and confronts him, determined to protect his share and his newfound allies.
“The Nut Job” is a lively animated adventure filled with humor, action, and unexpected alliances as the animals navigate their way through a world of heists and survival.
