**Storyline:**
Walter Sparrow, an animal control officer, is married to Agatha, and they have a son named Robin. One day, Walter fails to catch a stray dog named Ned and arrives late to meet Agatha. While waiting, Agatha visits a bookstore and discovers a novel titled *The Number 23* by Topsy Kretts. She later gifts the book to Walter for his birthday. As Walter reads it, he notices striking similarities between himself and the protagonist, a detective named Fingerling. Walter begins to visualize himself and his loved ones as characters from the book—himself as Fingerling and Agatha as Fabrizia, Fingerling’s girlfriend.
The story takes a darker turn when Fingerling encounters a woman referred to as Suicide Blonde, who is deeply obsessed with the number 23, claiming it rules her world. After she jumps to her death, Fingerling explores her apartment and discovers her writings about the enigma of the number 23. Soon, he starts noticing the number appearing everywhere in his life. Walter, similarly, becomes engrossed in the 23 enigma, believing that all events are connected to this number. His son Robin is intrigued, while Agatha dismisses its significance.
As Fingerling’s fixation on the number grows, so does Walter’s. Fingerling begins having nightmares about killing Fabrizia, mirroring Walter’s increasing paranoia. Concerned, Agatha suggests Walter consult her friend, Isaac French, who diagnoses Walter as paranoid and advises him to finish the book for clarity. Meanwhile, Fingerling confides in his psychiatrist, Dr. Miles Phoenix (Isaac), about his nightmares and the number 23, seeking guidance and relief from his turmoil.
