Description: The Northman is a 2022 American epic historical action thriller directed by Robert Eggers, co-written by Eggers and Sjón. Inspired by Norse mythology and based on the legend of Amleth, the film features a star-studded cast including Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe. The story follows Amleth, a Viking prince on a relentless quest to avenge his father’s murder.
Alexander Skarsgård, who also co-produced the film, had long aspired to create a Viking-inspired project. After collaborating with Eggers, the film became Eggers’ third directorial effort. Filming took place between August and December 2020 in various locations across Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and Iceland. The movie premiered in Stockholm on March 28, 2022, and was released theatrically in multiple countries starting April 13, 2022, followed by a U.S. release on April 22.
The film received widespread critical acclaim for its direction, production design, and performances, though it struggled at the box office, earning $69 million globally against a budget of $70–90 million. Despite this, it gained popularity in the VOD and DVD/Blu-ray markets.
Set in AD 895, the story begins with King Aurvandill returning home after his conquests, reuniting with his wife Queen Gudrún and their son Prince Amleth. During a ceremonial ritual overseen by the jester Heimir, Aurvandill is murdered by his brother Fjölnir, who kidnaps Gudrún and seizes the throne. Amleth escapes, vowing revenge. Years later, as a Viking berserker, Amleth learns from a Seeress that his path to vengeance is intertwined with a Maiden-King. Discovering Fjölnir’s exile in Iceland, Amleth infiltrates his farm as a slave, encountering Olga, a sorceress, and uncovering that his mother has married Fjölnir and borne him a son named Gunnar.
