The story follows Dean Corso, a rare book dealer in New York City, who is hired by wealthy collector Boris Balkan. Balkan possesses a copy of *The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows*, a 17th-century book by Aristide Torchia, rumored to have the power to summon the Devil. Torchia allegedly collaborated with the Devil to create the book, and only three copies survived after he was burned for heresy. Balkan believes only one of the three is authentic and tasks Corso with examining the other two to identify the genuine one.

During his journey, Corso encounters a mysterious woman, credited as “The Girl,” who seems to be following him. He interviews Liana Telfer, the widow of Andrew Telfer, who sold Balkan the book before committing suicide. Telfer attempts to seduce Corso to persuade him to sell her the book but attacks him when he refuses.

Later, Corso discovers a bookseller he trusted has been hanged, mirroring an engraving in *The Nine Gates*. He retrieves the book and travels to Toledo, Spain, where the Ceniza Brothers reveal that only six of the book’s nine engravings are signed “A.T.,” while the other three bear the initials “L.C.F.,” signifying Lucifer.

In Sintra, Portugal, Corso meets Victor Fargas, who owns another copy of the book. He discovers that three different engravings in this copy are signed “L.C.F.,” with subtle variations from the “A.T.” engravings. Corso reports his findings to Balkan, who instructs him to acquire Fargas’ copy. However, upon arriving, Corso finds Fargas drowned and the “L.C.F.” engravings missing from the book.

Corso’s investigation leads him to Paris, France, where he seeks the third copy owned by Baroness Kessler. She, wary of Corso and aware of his connection to Balkan, refuses to cooperate. [No additional links or HTML tags included.]
