Description: In 1825, during the period of the Black War, Irish convict Clare Carroll serves as a maid for a Colonial force unit led by Lieutenant Hawkins. When an officer visits to assess Hawkins for a promotion, Clare, known as “Nightingale,” entertains the men with her singing. Later, Clare approaches Hawkins to inquire about the recommendation letter that would grant her, her husband Aidan, and their baby daughter Bridget their freedom. However, Hawkins makes unwelcome advances, and when Clare resists, he rapes her in response to her perceived defiance. Aidan senses Clare’s distress but remains composed when confronting Hawkins about the letter, though his efforts fail.
That night, Aidan clashes with Hawkins, Sergeant Ruse, and Ensign Jago. The visiting officer witnesses the altercation and concludes that Hawkins is unfit for promotion. Determined to regain favor, Hawkins orders his men to prepare for a journey through the wilderness to Launceston, Tasmania. Before leaving, the soldiers intercept the Carroll family as they attempt to escape.
Hawkins rapes Clare again, instructing Ruse to do the same. He then shoots and kills Aidan and orders Jago to silence Clare’s crying baby, resulting in the infant’s death. When told to kill Clare, Jago hesitantly strikes her with his rifle, knocking her unconscious. The next morning, Clare awakens and reports the incident to an officer, but realizing no help will come, she decides to seek revenge herself. She enlists the aid of an Aboriginal tracker named Billy, convincing him that her mission is to reunite with her husband. Together, they embark on a perilous journey fueled by Clare’s determination for justice.
