Description: The Night House (2021) is a gripping psychological thriller that follows Beth, a woman reeling from the sudden loss of her husband, Owen, who died by suicide. After Owen takes a boat from their lake house and shoots himself with an unknown gun, Beth is left devastated. She struggles to cope, spending her nights drinking and sifting through his belongings. Despite her attempts to appear composed, her friend Claire and neighbor Mel grow increasingly worried about her well-being.
Owen’s cryptic suicide note—“You were right. There is nothing. Nothing is after you. You’re safe now”—haunts Beth. Soon, she begins experiencing unsettling supernatural occurrences in their home. She discovers a strange, reversed floor plan of their house and finds a photo on Owen’s phone of a woman who resembles her, leading her to suspect he was unfaithful.
During a night out with Claire, Beth reveals that she briefly died in a car accident years ago and saw nothingness, a belief Owen had always challenged. She recalls how Owen began sleepwalking when she battled depression, fearing she had transferred her despair to him. That same night, Beth is awakened by a ghostly presence and witnesses terrified women fleeing through the woods. She finds blood on the boat where Owen died and senses an invisible force nearby.
Curious about mysterious lights across the lake, Beth investigates and stumbles upon a reverse version of her and Owen’s home. Inside, she sees ghostly figures of women with Owen. After passing out, she awakens back in her own house. Determined to uncover the truth, she returns to the reversed house, now incomplete and empty, and finds a peculiar statue. Mel reveals he once saw Owen in the woods with a woman resembling Beth but never noticed the reversed house.
Beth delves deeper, uncovering more photos of women who look like her on Owen’s laptop. She identifies the statue as an occult voodoo doll from one of his books, realizing Owen was studying how to trap demonic entities. Her investigation leads her to a bookstore, where she meets Madelyne, one of the women from Owen’s photos. Madelyne denies any affair, leaving Beth more confused and desperate for answers.
The film masterfully blends suspense and supernatural elements, keeping viewers on edge as Beth unravels the dark mysteries surrounding her husband’s death.
