Description: Shy bookstore clerk Kosuke Mikado possesses the ability to see ghosts and spirits, a gift he wishes he didn’t have as it often leaves him terrified. Rihito Hiyakawa, a skilled exorcist with strong supernatural abilities but weak social skills, seems fearless in the face of both mortal and otherworldly threats. When these two unlikely partners join forces to tackle mysterious and bizarre cases, their unconventional methods may not always be the safest.
“The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window” (2021) boasts a visually striking aesthetic. The cinematography captures a dark, murky, and shadowy atmosphere without crossing into overly grim or self-parodying territory, a pitfall often seen in similar films. The visual style blends elements of early 2000s Japanese horror, the works of director Takashi Miike, and the tone of South Korean dramas. By the film’s climax, the visuals take on the stylistic flair of 70s Italian giallo films, known for their surreal stories and bold imagery, creating a visually captivating experience. Fans of the genre, particularly classics like “Deep Red” and “Tenebre,” will appreciate this homage.
However, the film’s camera work occasionally detracts from the performances. While the cinematography prioritizes creating a visually appealing frame, it sometimes fails to complement the storytelling or enhance the actors’ portrayals. For instance, during the first meeting of the two main characters in a bookstore setting, the composition and visual elements are well-executed, but the camera angles feel uninspired. The prolonged two-shot of their conversation appears awkward, unintentionally making Masaki Okada’s performance seem weaker than it is and giving the scene an amateurish quality. Though individual stills may look impressive, the overall execution in motion falls short, leaving the viewer with a sense of discomfort rather than engagement.
