Description: “The Nest” is a 2021 drama film set in the 1980s. It follows Rory O’Hara, an Englishman, and his American wife, Allison, who live a modest middle-class life in New York City with their children, Ben and Sam. Allison works as a horseback riding instructor, while Rory is a stock trader. Convinced that his career opportunities in the U.S. are limited, Rory persuades Allison to move to England, where he aims to rejoin his former employer Arthur Davis’s firm. Despite Allison’s reservations, the family relocates to a sprawling old mansion in Surrey, England.
Rory encourages Allison to establish her own horse farm on the property and purchases a horse named Richmond for her. Construction begins on a stable, and the children are enrolled in costly private schools. Rory takes Allison to upscale dinners with Arthur and his associates. However, the family struggles to adapt to their new life. Their isolated location and busy schedules make it challenging for the kids to get to school on time.
Several weeks later, construction on the stable suddenly halts when Allison discovers that Rory failed to pay the builders. She learns that their bank account is nearly empty. Rory assures her that money is on the way, but Allison is forced to dip into her secret cash reserve to support the family. She grows increasingly frustrated with Rory’s attempts to maintain a lavish appearance while they face financial ruin.
At work, Rory proposes that Arthur sell his company to an American firm looking to establish a London office, but Arthur declines. Back at home, Richmond, the horse, falls ill, and Allison has no choice but to seek help from a neighboring farmer, who euthanizes the animal. Instead of returning home after Arthur’s rejection, Rory visits his mother, who shows no interest in his family and accuses him of abandoning her. Upon his return, Rory and Allison have a heated argument over their financial struggles and his reckless, delusional behavior.
