Description: The Nest (2020) is a compelling drama set in the 1980s, centered around Rory O’Hara, an Englishman, and his American wife, Allison. Along with their children Ben and Sam, they lead a middle-class life in New York City. Ben is their shared child, while Sam is Allison’s daughter from a previous relationship. While Allison works as a horseback riding instructor, Rory is a trader. Convinced that his career prospects in the U.S. are limited, Rory persuades Allison to move to Britain, where he aims to rejoin his former employer Arthur Davis’s firm.
Despite Allison’s reservations, the family relocates to a grand old mansion in Surrey. Rory encourages Allison to start her own horse farm on the property, purchasing a horse named Richmond and beginning construction on a stable. Ben is enrolled in a prestigious private school, while Sam attends a state school. Rory takes Allison to upscale dinners with Arthur and his colleagues. However, the transition proves challenging. The family’s isolated location and long commutes make it difficult for the children to arrive at school on time.
Later, construction on the stable halts abruptly. Allison discovers that Rory failed to pay the builders and that their bank account is nearly empty. Though Rory promises to secure funds soon, Allison is forced to dip into her hidden savings to support the family. She becomes increasingly frustrated with Rory’s attempts to maintain a high-class facade despite their financial struggles. At work, Rory proposes that Arthur sell his company to an American firm looking to establish a London office, but Arthur declines. Meanwhile, Richmond, the horse, falls ill, and Allison must seek help from a nearby farmer, who euthanizes the animal. Following Arthur’s rejection, Rory visits his mother, who shows no interest in his family and accuses him of abandoning her. Returning home late, Rory engages in a heated argument with Allison over their financial crisis and his reckless behavior.
