**Storyline:**
Franciscan friar William of Baskerville and his novice, Adso of Melk, arrive at a Benedictine abbey in Northern Italy during the early 14th century. A mysterious death has occurred just before a significant theological Church conference. Known for his sharp deductive skills, William gains permission from the Abbot to investigate the death, which initially appears to be the suicide of a young illuminator. As the days pass, more strange deaths unfold.
William and Adso meet Salvatore, a hunchback who speaks in mixed languages, and his protector, Remigio da Varagine. William suspects Salvatore’s past involvement in a heretical sect and believes he and Remigio might be connected to the killings. Meanwhile, Adso is seduced by a feral peasant girl who sneaks into the abbey.
As they investigate to prevent accusations of demonic possession, William and Adso explore a hidden labyrinthine library in the abbey’s forbidden tower. William discovers it houses one of Christendom’s greatest collections, including rare works by Aristotle and other Classical philosophers. He concludes the library is kept secret because its pagan knowledge conflicts with Christian doctrine. William also deduces that the victims had read the only surviving copy of Aristotle’s Second Book of Poetics.
Their investigation is interrupted by the arrival of Bernardo Gui of the Inquisition, summoned for the conference. Gui, a zealous inquisitor with whom William has a troubled past, dismisses William’s theories and focuses on prosecuting those he believes responsible for the deaths.
