Though there is undeniable sexual tension between them, Leiningen decides to send her back to the United States. His decision is hastened when he learns from the local commissioner about an imminent threat—an approaching swarm of army ants, known as “marabunta.” Concerned for Joanna’s safety, he arranges for her departure a month earlier than planned.
As Joanna waits for the boat to take her home, the couple learns the marabunta will arrive in just a few days. Despite the danger, Leiningen refuses to abandon the plantation he has worked so hard to build. Instead, he resolves to stand his ground and fight the relentless natural threat. During the days leading up to the ants’ arrival, their shared efforts to prepare bring them closer together, and love begins to bloom. Joanna helps in the battle to save the plantation, demonstrating her strength and determination.
In a final, drastic act, Leiningen destroys a timber dam to flood his own estate, successfully driving the ants away. Together, they overcome the crisis, solidifying their newfound bond.
