Description: The Mustang (2019) tells the story of Roman Coleman, who has spent 12 years in prison after severely injuring his domestic partner in a violent attack. Due to his temper and violent tendencies, Roman has resisted efforts to reintegrate into society. While performing outdoor maintenance, he is assigned to a rehabilitation program led by rancher Myles, which involves training wild mustangs. Each inmate is given a horse to train over 12 weeks, after which the horse is sold at auction.
Roman struggles initially but receives guidance from Henry, a fellow inmate and skilled horse trainer. Over time, Roman bonds with his horse, named Marquis, and develops a friendship with Henry. However, tragedy strikes when Henry is murdered by Roman’s cellmate, Dan. In a fit of rage, Roman retaliates by nearly strangling Dan before guards intervene.
On the day of the auction, Roman invites his pregnant daughter Martha, hoping to mend their relationship. During the event, Roman is distracted by Martha’s absence, causing Marquis to panic when a helicopter flies overhead. Roman falls off the horse and narrowly escapes being trampled. Later, Myles informs Roman that Marquis is deemed untrainable and will be euthanized. Seizing an opportunity during a storm, Roman helps Marquis escape.
Sometime later, Roman receives a letter from Martha, acknowledging his decision to remain in prison. The letter includes a photo of Martha with Roman’s newborn grandson, whom she hopes he will meet during her next visit. As Roman finishes reading, he spots Marquis standing by the prison gates and smiles.
