Description: After their flight is canceled due to a storm, neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Bass (Idris Elba) and photojournalist Alex Martin (Kate Winslet) hire a private pilot, Walter (Beau Bridges), to fly them from Utah to Denver. They are both rushing to reach their destinations—Alex for her wedding in New York and Ben for an urgent surgery in Baltimore. However, Walter, who failed to file a flight plan, suffers a fatal stroke mid-flight, causing the plane to crash in the remote High Unites Wilderness. Ben, Alex, and Walter’s Labrador Retriever survive the crash, but Alex sustains a severe leg injury. Ben tends to her wounds and buries the pilot while she is unconscious.
When Alex regains consciousness, she urges Ben to leave her behind to seek help, but he refuses. As days pass with no rescue in sight and supplies running low, Alex becomes doubtful about their chances of survival. Ben initially insists on staying near the wreckage to wait for rescue but agrees to climb a ridge to search for signs of civilization. He finds nothing but endless mountains and barely avoids falling off a cliff.
While Ben is away, Alex explores his belongings and hears a message from his wife, who says, “I’m glad to have had this time with you.” Later, a cougar attacks the dog. Alex uses a flare gun to kill the cougar, saving the dog. When Ben returns, he tends to the dog’s injuries, and they cook the cougar for food, which Ben estimates will last them ten days.
Their differing opinions on what to do next cause tension. Alex decides to descend the mountain alone, while Ben discovers the plane’s tail section with a beacon—only to find it broken. Ben catches up to Alex, and together they continue their journey, eventually reaching the tree line and taking shelter in a cave for the night.
