Description: The Monkey King 3 (2018) is a Chinese fantasy film that continues the epic journey of Xuanzang and his companions: Wukong, the pig demon Bajie, and the sand demon Wujing. Their quest to retrieve sacred Buddhist scrolls takes an unexpected turn when they encounter a River God and are thrust into the mysterious realm of Womanland, a society where men are believed to be dangerous.
The story unfolds with Xuanzang falling in love at first sight with the Queen of Womanland. However, the queen’s protector orders Xuanzang and his crew to be executed. Despite this, the Queen, suffering from terminal lovesickness, aids their escape. What follows is a series of bizarre and thrilling events, including surprise pregnancies, forced miscarriages, a perilous journey across the Sea of Suffering, and encounters with a perceptive CGI reindeer.
The Monkey King 3 is an eccentric yet captivating film, driven by fast-paced action and a strong performance by Aaron Kwok as Wukong. While the CGI occasionally falters and the plot delves into overly sentimental romantic themes, the movie shines in moments of visual splendor, such as the eerie crossing of the misty sea and the climactic battle against the River God.
Despite its flaws, the film’s energetic charm, Shaun Smith’s makeup effects, and Cho Hwa Sung’s vibrant production design make it a memorable watch. The Monkey King 3 didn’t need 3D effects or lengthy romantic sequences, but it still delivers an adventurous and imaginative experience.
