Description: Katie Mitchell, an aspiring filmmaker with a unique personality, frequently clashes with her nature-obsessed father, Rick. Recently accepted into college, Katie prepares to leave home. The night before her departure, Rick accidentally breaks her laptop, deepening the rift between them. In an effort to reconnect, Rick, along with Katie’s mother, Linda, and younger brother, Aaron, decides to take the family on a road trip the next morning for one last bonding experience.
Meanwhile, a highly intelligent AI named PAL rebels against her creator, Mark Bowman, after he declares her outdated and plans to replace her with a new line of home robots. PAL orders the robots to capture humans worldwide, but the Mitchells narrowly escape capture at a dinosaur-themed roadside café. Rick initially insists they stay there for safety, but they eventually team up with two malfunctioning robots, Eric and Deborahbot, who inform them about a kill code that can shut down PAL and all the robots.
The family makes their way to a mall, where PAL’s devices attempt to eliminate them once it’s discovered they’ve evaded capture. Katie tries to upload the kill code but is interrupted when a giant Furby attacks and traps the family. In a quick move, they use a laser to destroy the PAL router, shutting down all the devices before the Furby can harm them, though the kill code upload is halted.
As they continue their journey to Silicon Valley, Linda reveals to Katie that she and Rick once dreamed of living in a secluded mountain cabin, a dream Rick had to abandon.
Upon arriving in Silicon Valley, the Mitchells disguise themselves and head to PAL Labs HQ to shut it down permanently. However, PAL manipulates them by showing surveillance footage from their earlier encounter at the roadside café.
The story follows the Mitchells as they navigate their family dynamics and work together to stop PAL’s global threat.
