The story follows Joan, who experiences a violent and supernatural vision as a child. Upon returning home, she witnesses her village being destroyed by fire. Her sister, Catherine, hides her from the attacking English soldiers, who are engaged in a long-standing conflict with France. Tragically, Joan sees her sister being brutally murdered and assaulted. After this traumatic event, Joan is taken in by distant relatives.
Years later, at Chinon, the Dauphin Charles VII, who is soon to become the King of France, receives a message from the now-teenage Joan. She requests an army to lead against the English forces. Joan meets Charles and his mother-in-law, Yolande of Aragon, and shares her visions. Desperate for hope, Charles believes in her prophecy.
Dressed in armor, Joan leads the French army to the besieged city of Orléans. She offers the English a chance to surrender, which they reject. The French commanders, doubtful of Joan’s leadership, begin the battle without her the next morning. Upon her arrival, she halts the French retreat and leads a successful charge to capture the fort. The army then moves to attack the enemy stronghold, the Tourelles. Joan again offers the English a chance to surrender, but they refuse. Despite heavy casualties and Joan being severely wounded, the French soldiers press on.
