Description: **The Menu (2022) Movie Synopsis**
Tyler and his girlfriend, Margot, travel by boat to Hawthorne, an exclusive restaurant owned by celebrity chef Julian Slowik, located on a private island funded by Slowik’s wealthy investor. Among the other guests are food critic Lilian Bloom and her editor, Ted; a wealthy couple, Richard and Anne Liebbrandt; a past-his-prime movie star and his assistant, Felicity; and business partners Soren, Dave, and Bryce.
The group is given a tour of the island by the restaurant’s captain, Elsa, who notes that Margot was not Tyler’s original guest for the evening. During dinner, the first few molecular gastronomy dishes receive mixed reactions. Tyler, a devoted foodie and fan of Slowik, is thrilled by the experience, but Margot feels uneasy in the restaurant’s rigid, ritualistic environment. Slowik and Elsa question Margot’s presence, but she avoids sharing details about herself.
As the evening progresses, the courses and Slowik’s monologues become increasingly unsettling. During a dish called “The Mess,” Slowik introduces the sous-chef who designed it, then publicly humiliates him for prioritizing work over a normal life. The sous-chef tragically takes his own life, shocking the guests. When Richard attempts to leave, Slowik’s staff brutally cuts off one of his fingers.
Slowik explains that this is all part of “the menu.” He reveals that each guest was chosen for reasons tied to his frustrations with his craft and his relentless pursuit of perfection. He declares that the night will end with everyone’s death. However, Margot’s unexpected presence complicates his plan. Slowik offers her a choice: to die alongside the staff or the guests. He infers that Margot works in the service industry, and she admits she is an escort hired by Tyler.
