Description: The Marvels is a 2023 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics, featuring the characters Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel). Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it serves as a sequel to Captain Marvel (2019) and follows the events of the television miniseries Ms. Marvel (2022). Directed by Nia DaCosta, the film’s screenplay was co-written by Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik. The cast includes Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, along with Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, and Samuel L. Jackson. The story unfolds as Danvers, Rambeau, and Khan unite after discovering they swap places with each other whenever they use their powers.
Marvel Studios announced a sequel to Captain Marvel in July 2019, with development starting in January 2020. McDonnell was brought on board following her work on WandaVision (2021). Larson was confirmed to reprise her role, and DaCosta was hired to direct in August. In December, it was revealed that Parris would return as Rambeau from WandaVision, with Vellani reprising her role from Ms. Marvel. Filming began in New Jersey in April 2021, with the title announced in early May. Principal photography took place from July 2021 to May 2022 at various locations, including Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, Longcross Studios in Surrey, Los Angeles, and Tropea, Italy. Karasik’s contribution was acknowledged during post-production.
The Marvels premiered in Las Vegas on November 7, 2023, and was released in the United States on November 10, 2023, as part of Phase Five of the MCU. The film received mixed reviews from critics.
