Storyline:
In June 2012, Jesse Arista, an 18-year-old high school graduate, lives with his father Cesar, sister Evette, and grandmother Irma in Oxnard, California. He spends his summer with his best friend, Hector Estrella. Their peaceful days take a dark turn when Ana Sanchez, a mysterious woman living in the apartment below them and rumored to be a witch, is found murdered. Jesse and Hector witness their classmate Oscar Lopez fleeing the scene, making him the prime suspect.
Curious and adventurous, the two investigate Ana’s apartment, where they uncover strange items related to black magic, VHS tapes, and a journal detailing spells capable of opening doorways to unholy realms. Along with their friend Marisol Vargas, they attempt a ritual from the journal, which triggers a series of paranormal events in Jesse’s apartment.
One night, the trio communicates with an unknown entity through a game. Jesse soon discovers a mysterious bite mark on his arm and begins to exhibit superhuman abilities, such as enhanced strength and levitation. These powers come in handy when he defends himself against two thugs, but the situation grows darker.
At a party, Jesse takes a girl to Ana’s apartment, where he encounters Oscar. Oscar’s black eyes and identical bite mark terrify Jesse as he warns him that something inside them will eventually take control, forcing them to harm those they love. Oscar then vanishes, only to commit suicide by jumping off a building moments later.
As the group digs deeper, they uncover a secret trapdoor in Ana’s apartment, leading them to a witch’s altar and photographs of Jesse, his pregnant mother, Ana, Oscar, and Lois. A mysterious woman in black appears but leaves without incident. Later, Jesse is drawn to the trapdoor after hearing his dog Chavo’s cries for help. Inside, he encounters younger versions of Katie and Kristi, both with black eyes, before being attacked by an unknown force.
The story unfolds as Jesse and his friends struggle to understand the dark forces at play and the terrifying truth behind the mark that binds them.
