Description: “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” a 1962 film, tells the story of Senator Ranse Stoddard and his wife Hallie as they visit Shinbone, a frontier town, to attend the funeral of Tom Doniphon. When a local newspaper editor questions why a senator would attend a rancher’s funeral, Stoddard recounts events from 25 years earlier. As a young attorney, Ranse was attacked and robbed by the notorious outlaw Liberty Valance. Tom Doniphon rescued Ranse and brought him to Shinbone, where he was cared for by Hallie and others. They explained that Valance terrorized the town, and only Tom dared to confront him, believing force was the only language Valance understood.
Determined to uphold justice, Ranse begins practicing with a gun, despite Hallie’s concerns for his safety. Tom warns Ranse about Valance’s cunning and subtly asserts his relationship with Hallie. When Shinbone’s residents elect delegates for a statehood convention, Ranse and newspaper editor Dutton Peabody are chosen, defying Valance’s threats. Valance later challenges Ranse to a duel. Despite Tom’s offer to help him escape, Ranse refuses.
After Valance’s gang attacks Peabody and nearly kills him, a confrontation ensues outside a saloon. Valance taunts Ranse, shooting him in the arm, but Ranse fires back, killing Valance. This pivotal moment shapes Ranse’s journey to becoming a senator, forever altering the lives of those in Shinbone.”
