Description: Logan Thibault, a US Marine serving in Iraq, witnesses a fellow Marine named “Aces” die while trying to save one of his men during an ambush. The next morning, Logan discovers a photograph of a young woman just before a mortar strike destroys the area where he had been sitting, killing many around him. Unable to locate the photo’s owner, he keeps it. One of his squad members refers to the woman in the picture as his “guardian angel” right before their Humvee is destroyed in an explosion.
After returning to Colorado to stay with his sister and her family, who have been caring for his dog, Zeus, Logan struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and survivor guilt. Deciding it’s best to leave, he sets out to find the woman in the photograph. Guided by the image of a lighthouse, Logan and Zeus travel to Louisiana, where a local resident recognizes the woman and mentions she was once married to a friend, a deputy sheriff.
Logan eventually finds the woman, Beth Green, but struggles to explain his presence. Mistaking his intentions, Beth assumes he’s there for a job, and her grandmother, Ellie, hires him. Initially, Beth is annoyed by Logan, but she gradually warms to him as his calm demeanor, work ethic, and ability to repair machinery become evident. Logan also forms a supportive bond with Beth’s son, Ben, who lacks a positive male role model since the death of Beth’s brother, Drake.
Beth’s ex-husband, Sheriff’s Deputy Keith Clayton, is immediately suspicious of Logan. Keith, who is brusque and domineering, discourages Ben from playing the violin in his presence, leading the boy to practice in his treehouse instead.
