Storyline:
Walburga Korschel, born in 1880 to German immigrant parents, grew up in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area among a community of fellow German immigrants. At the age of 12, she began working at the textile mill owned by Fred William Oesterreich, a successful German immigrant who often hired people from his community. Walburga was known for her charm and attractiveness, quickly gaining the attention of Fred. The two married when she was 17. As Fred’s wife, Walburga maintained her popularity among the workers, often mediating labor disputes on behalf of her less approachable husband.
From the start, rumors circulated that Walburga entertained numerous lovers during the day while Fred was away at the mills. In 1913, at the age of 33, she met Otto Sanhuber, a 17-year-old sewing-machine repairman employed by her husband. Their encounter began when she invited him to her home to fix her sewing machine, sparking a passionate affair. To avoid suspicion, Walburga introduced Sanhuber as her “vagabond half-brother.”
As their relationship deepened, the need to hide it from Fred and the neighbors led Sanhuber to secretly move into the attic of the Oesterreichs’ home. Accessible through a hidden panel in the bedroom closet, the attic became his living space, furnished with a cot, food, books, and writing materials. During the day, Sanhuber performed household chores, while at night, he remained silent, spending his time reading and writing science fiction stories. Walburga would mail his writings to potential publishers.
Sanhuber later described himself as Walburga’s “sex slave,” claiming they were intimate up to eight times a day. Remarkably, Fred remained unaware of Sanhuber’s presence in the house.
