“The Lost City” is not particularly original, drawing inspiration from films like “Romancing the Stone” and other adventure classics. Its plot and humor are predictable, much like the looming volcano on the remote island where the story unfolds. Yet, there’s a comforting and enjoyable familiarity to it. The directors, Adam and Aaron Nee, know precisely what their audience desires, delivering a charming, non-franchise romantic adventure perfect for a theater outing with popcorn or a cozy streaming session with wine.
Loretta Sage, played by Sandra Bullock, is a romance writer struggling with burnout and grief after losing her husband. Her disdain for her own books is matched by her annoyance with Alan, the dim-witted model who plays her fictional hero. During a book promotion event, Loretta is kidnapped by Daniel Radcliffe’s character, Abigail Fairfax, who believes the lost city in her novel is real and needs her help to translate ancient writings leading to a treasure—before a volcano destroys it all. Determined to save her, Alan embarks on a risky rescue mission, aided by his meditation guru Jack (Brad Pitt) and Loretta’s editor Beth (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).
