Storyline:
Ted Wiggins, a 12-year-old boy, lives in Thneedville, a city enclosed by walls where all plants and vegetation are artificial. Ted is infatuated with Audrey and decides to win her admiration by finding a “real tree.” His grandmother, Norma, shares the tale of the Once-ler, who knows what happened to the trees. Determined, Ted leaves Thneedville to seek out the Once-ler, only to discover that the outside world is a desolate and polluted wasteland.
Upon finding the Once-ler, Ted persuades him to reveal the story of the trees over several visits. On his next journey, Ted encounters Thneedville’s greedy mayor, Aloysius O’Hare, whose company profits from selling bottled oxygen to the polluted city. O’Hare warns Ted that trees, which produce oxygen naturally, threaten his business and tries to pressure him to stay in town. Despite this, Ted continues meeting with the Once-ler.
The Once-ler recounts his past as a young inventor who arrived in a thriving forest filled with animals and Truffula trees. After cutting down a tree, he was confronted by the Lorax, the forest’s guardian who “speaks for the trees.” Initially, the Lorax tried to drive the Once-ler away but eventually convinced him not to cut down more trees. Using Truffula fibers, the Once-ler created the “Thneed,” a versatile knitted product that gained immense popularity.
At first, the Once-ler harvested Truffula tufts sustainably, but his greedy relatives convinced him to chop down trees to increase production. This led to massive profits but also caused deforestation and pollution. After cutting the last Truffula tree, the Once-ler’s business collapsed, and his family abandoned him. Overcome with guilt and regret, he became a recluse.
With the forest destroyed and the area uninhabitable, the Lorax sent the animals away to find a new home and vanished into the sky. Before leaving, the Lorax etched a single word on a pile of rocks: “Unless.”
The story highlights the consequences of environmental destruction and the importance of protecting nature.
