Description: Paul Crewe is a former NFL quarterback who was accused of point-shaving, though it was never proven. Despite this, he was placed on federal probation for five years. One night, after getting drunk at a party, he takes his girlfriend Lena’s Bentley for a joyride through San Diego, leading to a police chase and a crash. As a result, his probation is revoked, and he is sentenced to three years in prison.
Texas warden Rudolph Hazen, a football enthusiast, uses his connections to have Crewe transferred to his prison. Hazen aims to use Crewe to coach a football team composed of prison guards, hoping to boost his reputation for an upcoming election. To force Crewe’s cooperation, Hazen confines him to a hot box for a week. Crewe suggests that the guards play a practice game against a weaker team to build morale. Hazen assigns Crewe the task of forming a team of inmates, believing the unruly prisoners will be impossible to unite, thus reinforcing his authority.
Crewe befriends Caretaker, who helps organize tryouts. However, most inmates are uninterested due to Crewe’s tarnished reputation. Former college football star Nate Scarborough steps in to assist Crewe, recruiting tough inmates who join to seek revenge against the abusive guards. Caretaker urges Crewe to recruit black inmates for offensive strength and speed. Crewe challenges Deacon Moss, their leader, to a basketball game. Despite Deacon’s blatant fouls, Crewe refuses to call them out. Deacon wins but refuses to help, though Earl Megget is impressed by Crewe’s resilience and joins as the team’s running back.
