Description: In 1990, a young woman driving on a deserted highway is aggressively pursued by a motorist. After a tense chase, she pulls into a gas station seeking refuge, but the motorist follows her. Discovering the gas station is closed, she flees into the desert while the stalker, armed with weapons, continues to pursue her. She eventually catches the attention of a passing truck driver and narrowly escapes.
Years later in Los Angeles, Kern County deputy sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon is summoned to the L.A. Sheriff’s Department to retrieve forensic evidence related to a recent murder. A former detective facing pressure to retire, Deacon accompanies lead detective Jimmy Baxter to the scene of a new homicide. Deacon recognizes similarities between the killer’s methods and an unsolved serial murder case from his past. Shortly after, another woman, Ronda Rathbun, disappears while jogging after being followed by a car.
Deacon’s obsession with his unresolved case, which led to his divorce and a heart attack, concerns his superiors, but he decides to stay in Los Angeles to assist Baxter. Another victim’s body is soon found, and the killer’s pattern matches both the recent murders and Deacon’s old case—targeting prostitutes who were stabbed to death. Deacon focuses his investigation on Albert Sparma, a suspicious repair shop employee near the crime scenes. After attempting to tail Sparma and bringing him in for questioning, Sparma taunts the detectives and is released, further fueling Deacon’s frustration.
