Description: Bhagat Singh was born on September 28, 1907, in Banga village, located in the Lyallpur District of Punjab Province during British rule in India. At the age of 12, he made a solemn vow to free India from British oppression after witnessing the tragic aftermath of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Inspired by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s satyagraha policies, Bhagat initially supported the non-cooperation movement, which encouraged Indians to boycott British goods, schools, and government jobs. However, when Gandhi called off the movement following the Chauri Chaura incident in February 1922, Bhagat felt betrayed and turned to revolutionary methods. As an adult, he joined the Hindustan Republic Association to fight for India’s independence, ultimately landing in prison for his actions. After being bailed out by his father, Kishan, Bhagat was expected to manage a dairy farm and marry a woman named Mannewali. Instead, he left home, stating that his love for his country came first.

When Lala Lajpat Rai was killed by police during a protest against the Simon Commission, Bhagat, along with Shivaram Rajguru, Sukhdev Thapar, and Chandra Shekhar Azad, sought revenge by assassinating police officer John Saunders on December 17, 1928. Later in 1929, when the British introduced the Trade Disputes and Public Safety Bills, Bhagat, alongside Batukeshwar Dutt, bombed the Central Legislative Assembly. They deliberately targeted empty benches to avoid casualties. Arrested and put on trial, Bhagat delivered a powerful speech explaining his revolutionary ideals. He aimed to represent the freedom fighters truthfully, countering British propaganda that labeled them as violent. This act earned him immense popularity, especially among the youth, laborers, and farmers, surpassing even Gandhi’s influence.
