Plot Summary:
Dr. Peter Newmans, played by Johnny Simmons, is a 27-year-old sex therapist leading a quiet life. He secretly harbors feelings for his attractive neighbor, Michelle, portrayed by Brittany Snow. Known for his non-sexual persona, Peter has even authored a book arguing that sex is not essential.
When Michelle breaks up with her workaholic boyfriend, Peter seizes the chance to console her. In a vulnerable moment, she kisses him, but he suddenly experiences a severe headache and has to leave. Around this time, Peter has been suffering from recurrent migraines, though the cause remains unknown.
The next day, his friends, played by Kumail Nanjiani and Beck Bennett, convince him to join their weekend basketball game. During the game, Peter is accidentally hit in the groin, leading him to visit the emergency room. Suspecting a head injury, the doctor orders a CT scan and an MRI. During the examination, the doctor notices Peter’s underdeveloped testicles and uncovers a long-term benign brain tumor pressing against his pituitary gland. This tumor has suppressed his testosterone production, preventing him from entering puberty.
Relieved to discover he’s not abnormal, Peter insists on immediate surgery to remove the tumor. After a successful operation, he stays with his parents, played by J.K. Simmons and Maria Bello, to recover. Soon after, he experiences his first erection, marking the onset of puberty.
As Peter transitions into adulthood, he faces the challenges of puberty, including mood swings, heightened sexual desires, voice changes, and severe acne.
