Description: The Last Warrior, also known as The Last Bogatyr, is a 2017 Russian fantasy comedy film directed by Dmitriy Dyachenko. The story revolves around Baba Yaga and Koschei, traditional villains in Russian and Slavic fairy tales. Produced by The Walt Disney Company CIS in collaboration with Russian studios Yellow, Black and White and Kinoslovo, the film features a cast including Viktor Khorinyak, Mila Sivatskaya, Elena Yakovleva, Ekaterina Vilkova, Konstantin Lavronenko, and Yevgeny Dyatlov.
The film was released on October 26, 2017, and quickly became the highest-grossing local-language film in Russia, earning 1.68 billion rubles ($28.8 million) and eventually reaching $30.5 million. It holds the 12th place in Russia’s biggest box-office audiences. This marked Disney Russia’s second film tailored for the Russian market, following The Book of Masters in 2009. A sequel, The Last Warrior: Root of Evil, was released in January 2021, with a third film premiering in December 2021.
The plot is set in Belogorie, a parallel version of ancient Russia, where Sorceress Varvara hunts down Alyosha Popovich, believed to be the last Bogatyr (hero or warrior). She petrifies him and throws him into the sea, joining other victims. In modern Moscow, Ivan Naydenov, a young orphan and con artist, poses as a “white mage” and participates in rigged psychic shows. After questioning his life choices, particularly when asked to heal a comatose boy, Ivan is mysteriously transported to Belogorie.
In this magical world filled with Russian fairy tale characters, a volkhv claims Ivan is the lost son of Ilya Muromets, hidden on Earth years ago. Captured by Varvara’s warriors, Ivan is brought to Prince Dobrynya Nikitich. While the prince is friendly, Varvara secretly imprisons Ivan in her dungeon. There, he meets Koschei, who reveals that the magical Sword Kladenets is Ivan’s only way back to Earth.
