Description: “The Last Summer” (2019) is a heartfelt story about young love, aspirations, and the challenges of growing up. Griffin Hourigan, a recent prep school graduate, is set to attend Columbia University largely due to his father’s influence, despite his own desire to study at Berklee College of Music. At a party, he reunites with Phoebe Fisher, an old friend he has always admired. Phoebe is focused on creating a documentary for a film festival and declines Griffin’s invitation to date, explaining she wants to dedicate her summer to her project. However, as Griffin helps her with the film’s audio, their connection deepens, and they begin a romantic relationship.
Phoebe, who plans to attend New York University, reveals she needs to win the festival to fund her education. She encourages Griffin to pursue his passion for music instead of attending Columbia. Meanwhile, Griffin discovers his father is secretly involved with Phoebe’s single mother. He keeps this information from Phoebe until her mother finds out and ends the affair. Hurt and betrayed, Phoebe blames Griffin for not being honest sooner and breaks up with him.
Heartbroken, Griffin apologizes to Phoebe’s mother and expresses how much Phoebe means to him. He sends her a gesture of reconciliation, and she invites him to her documentary premiere. The film is a success, securing Phoebe’s place at NYU. At the premiere, Griffin reconciles with Phoebe and reveals he has decided to attend Berklee. Although they will be attending different schools and are no longer in the same city, they promise to visit each other often, humorously acknowledging that their relationship might face challenges.
