Description: “The Last Mark” (2022) is a gripping thriller that turns the typical villainous hitman trope on its head by casting the assassin as the unexpected hero. The story unfolds primarily in a safe-house, where an aging hitman, Keele, played by Shawn Doyle, grapples with his conscience. He seeks to do one final good deed in his life, even as time runs out to redeem himself. The film’s unique premise is bolstered by strong performances, a well-crafted script, and sharp direction. While the plot may feel familiar at times, the film’s humor and pacing make it a compelling watch.
Keele, tired of the ruthless nature of his profession and disturbed by his unhinged partner Palmer (Bryce Hodgson), reaches a breaking point during their latest assignment. After eliminating their target, the duo discovers a witness, Peyton (Alexia Fast), a call girl who narrowly escapes. Keele initially captures Peyton and considers disposing of her, but instead chooses to spare her life and help her flee the country to protect her from Palmer.
With the assistance of his friend Eli (Jonas Chernick), Keele secures fake passports for their escape. As the clock ticks, Keele and Peyton engage in a mix of conflict, insults, and unexpected bonding. Meanwhile, Palmer uncovers Keele’s betrayal and sets out to eliminate everyone associated with the mission, including Keele himself.
“The Last Mark” offers a fresh take on the thriller genre, blending tension, moral dilemmas, and dark humor into an engaging cinematic experience.
