Description: “The Last Manhunt,” a 2022 film, reimagines the classic Western tale of a manhunt, a popular theme during the genre’s peak. In these stories, a local sheriff would gather a posse to chase down a fugitive who committed a terrible crime, often ending in a dramatic shootout and the outlaw’s death, restoring order. The film draws inspiration from the legendary story of “Willie Boy,” one of the last official manhunts in American history. This real-life event, involving a Native American outlaw fleeing with his lover, was previously depicted in the 1969 Western *Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here*, based on the 1960 novel *Willie Boy: A Desert Manhunt*. Director Christian Camargo offers a modern interpretation of this story.
The narrative follows Willie Boy (Martin Sensmeier) and Carlota (Mainei Kinimaka), who keep their relationship hidden from Carlota’s strict father, William (Zahn McClarnon). When William discovers the truth, he confronts and assaults Willie Boy. Despite warnings to stay away, the couple continues their relationship. In a heated altercation, a gun goes off accidentally, resulting in William’s death. Willie Boy and Carlota are forced to flee to escape retribution.
Local sheriff Wilson (Christian Camargo) assembles a posse to track down Willie Boy and bring Carlota back. Joining him are Hyde (Raoul Max Trujillo), a Native American lawman, Randolph (Mojean Aria), a journalist seeking to sensationalize the story, and a mixed group of gunslingers, including a Native American member known as Big Jim. The hunt unfolds as the posse pursues the couple across the rugged landscape of the Old West.
