StoryLine:
The film begins with Afghan-American writer Amir Qadiri and his wife, Soraya, observing children flying kites at a bayside park. Upon returning home, Amir finds packages of his newly published novel, *A Season for Ashes*. Soraya affectionately refers to the book as Amir’s “baby,” alluding to the couple’s struggle to have a child of their own. Amir then receives a surprising call from Rahim Khan, an old friend of his father, who is now living in Peshawar, Pakistan.
The story flashes back to Amir’s childhood in Kabul, where he is the ten-year-old son of a wealthy and respected man, known as “Agha Sahib” or “Baba” (father). Amir’s best friend, Hassan, is the son of their Hazara servant, Ali. Amir enjoys kite fighting, a popular sport among Kabul’s boys, where participants compete to cut each other’s kite strings. Hassan acts as Amir’s “kite runner,” retrieving fallen kites with remarkable precision. Hassan is also skilled with a slingshot, and on his birthday, Amir gifts him one made in the United States. Hassan vows unwavering loyalty to Amir, promising to do anything for him, even “eat dirt” if asked.
Amir is a budding writer and often reads stories to the illiterate Hassan, who particularly loves the tale of Rostam and Sohrab from the Persian epic *Shahnameh*. However, Baba disapproves of Amir’s bookish nature, complaining to Rahim Khan that his son lacks courage and relies on Hassan to defend him. Overhearing this, Amir feels deeply hurt, but Rahim Khan consoles him, assuring him of his father’s love and encouraging him to continue writing.
