Description: Scott Carlin is a 24-year-old high school dropout living with his mother Margie and sister Claire on Staten Island. His father, a firefighter named Stan, died in the line of duty when Scott was seven, leaving a lasting impact on him. Scott struggles with medical issues, including Crohn’s disease and ADD, and often uses marijuana to cope. Unemployed, he spends his days with friends, including Kelsey, with whom he has a casual relationship. While Kelsey desires something more serious, Scott fears commitment, doubting his worthiness. His sister Claire, about to leave for college, worries that Scott’s unresolved issues may worsen after her departure.
Scott aspires to become a tattoo artist and practices on his friends, though his skills are inconsistent. One day, while at the beach, he meets a 9-year-old boy named Harold, who asks for a tattoo but runs off after receiving a single line. Later, Harold’s father, Ray, visits Scott’s home. Initially angry, Ray softens upon meeting Margie and asks her out. Margie, who hasn’t dated since Stan’s death, agrees. Their relationship progresses, and Margie eventually informs Scott, who is unsettled by Ray’s profession as a firefighter, a reminder of his father’s death.
During a Staten Island Yankees game with Ray and his colleagues, Scott argues that firefighters shouldn’t have families, as their deaths cause too much pain. Frustrated with Scott’s behavior, Margie and Ray give him an ultimatum to move out. Feeling rejected, Scott visits Claire and confesses his plan to sabotage his mother’s relationship with Ray, which he deems unhealthy.
Scott takes steps toward independence, getting a job as a busboy and bonding with Harold and his sister Kelly by walking them to school. Meanwhile, his friends plot to rob a pharmacy for oxycodone pills to sell. Reluctantly, Scott agrees to act as the lookout, but the robbery goes wrong when the pharmacist and his wife intervene. One of Scott’s friends is shot, and the group is arrested, though Scott manages to escape.
As Scott navigates his challenges, he begins to confront his fears and take responsibility for his life, marking a turning point in his personal growth.
