Description: The Kids Are All Right is a 2010 film that tells the story of Nicole “Nic” (Annette Bening) and Jules Allgood (Julianne Moore), a married same-sex couple living in Los Angeles. Nic works as an obstetrician, while Jules is a housewife launching a landscape design business. Both have children conceived through the same sperm donor.
Their 16-year-old son, Laser (Josh Hutcherson), becomes curious about his biological father. Since he’s too young to request this information, he asks his 18-year-old sister, Joni (Mia Wasikowska), to contact the sperm bank. The donor is identified as Paul Hatfield (Mark Ruffalo), a restaurant owner. After meeting Paul, Joni is charmed by his bohemian lifestyle, and Paul grows eager to be involved in their lives. Joni insists on keeping this a secret from their mothers, but Nic and Jules eventually discover the truth and invite Paul to dinner.
During the dinner, Jules reveals her landscape business, and Paul hires her to redesign his backyard. Although Nic disapproves, Jules accepts the job. As Jules spends more time with Paul, she begins to feel appreciated by him—something she feels is lacking in her relationship with Nic. This leads to an impulsive affair between Jules and Paul.
As the family grows closer to Paul, Nic becomes uneasy, fearing his influence over the children. Tensions rise when Nic discovers evidence of Jules’s affair during a dinner at Paul’s house. Confronted by Nic, Jules admits to the relationship but insists she isn’t in love with Paul and hasn’t changed her sexual orientation—she simply craved appreciation. The argument is overheard by Joni and Laser, creating turmoil within the family.
