Description: After miraculously surviving a seemingly fatal gunshot to the head, Gulf War veteran Jack Starks returns to Vermont in 1992, plagued by bouts of amnesia. While wandering, he encounters a young girl named Jackie and her struggling alcoholic mother beside their broken-down truck. A bond quickly forms between Jack and Jackie, and she asks for his dogtags, which he gives her. After helping them get the truck running, Jack continues his journey. Soon after, he is picked up by a man driving along the same road, but they are stopped by a police officer.
The scene shifts: Jack is discovered unconscious near the body of the dead officer, who was shot with his own gun. Despite Jack’s insistence that someone else was present, his amnesia undermines his credibility. He is declared not guilty by reason of insanity and sent to a mental institution.
Under the care of psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Becker, Jack becomes the subject of unauthorized experimental treatments. He is injected with drugs, strapped into a straitjacket, and confined in a morgue drawer for sensory deprivation. During these sessions, Jack inexplicably travels 15 years into the future. In this alternate timeline, he encounters an older Jackie working at a diner. Though she doesn’t recognize him, she offers him shelter out of pity. While in her apartment, Jack finds his dogtags and confronts her. Terrified, Jackie reveals that Jack Starks died on New Year’s Day in 1993, leaving him desperate to piece together the truth about his fate.
