Description: In the Southern African nation of Matobo, rebel leader Ajene Xola escorts Simon Broome and Philippe to the abandoned Centennial Football Stadium. They discuss how President Edmond Zuwanie’s regime has brutally suppressed the population, instilling fear in the survivors. Upon arrival, they find informants—schoolboys—who lead Ajene and Simon to bodies left by Zuwanie’s forces while Philippe remains in the car. A sudden commotion draws Ajene and Simon back to the field, where they are executed by the boys, who are revealed to be collaborators with Zuwanie’s secret police. Hearing gunshots, Philippe escapes, capturing images of Matoban officials arriving in a car before fleeing the scene.
Meanwhile, Simon’s sister, Silvia Broome, works as an interpreter at the United Nations in New York City. A dual citizen of the United States and Matobo, Silvia has a unique background that leads UN Security Chief Lee Wu to describe her as embodying the UN. The UN is preparing to indict President Zuwanie for his crimes, including ethnic cleansing and atrocities in Matobo. Once a liberator, Zuwanie has become as corrupt and oppressive as the regime he overthrew. He plans to address the UN General Assembly to defend himself and avoid prosecution.
During a security evacuation at the UN building, Silvia returns at night to retrieve her belongings and overhears two men discussing an assassination plot in the Matoban language, Ku. Suspicious and alarmed, she becomes entangled in a dangerous conspiracy.
