**Storyline:**
In the opening scene, CBS producer Lowell Bergman persuades Sheikh Fadlallah, the founder of Hezbollah, to participate in an interview for *60 Minutes* with Mike Wallace. Despite facing intimidation from armed bodyguards during the preparation, both Wallace and Bergman remain steadfast.
Later, Bergman seeks assistance from Jeffrey Wigand, a former executive at the Brown & Williamson tobacco company, to translate technical documents. Wigand agrees but avoids discussing other matters due to a confidentiality agreement. Brown & Williamson later pressures Wigand into signing a stricter agreement, causing him to accuse Bergman of betrayal. Bergman visits Wigand to defend himself and uncover the potential story. Although Wigand possesses highly damaging information, he hesitates to risk his severance package by revealing anything.
Wigand’s family moves to a smaller home, and he starts working as a teacher. One night, he discovers signs of trespassing and receives a threatening call. Meanwhile, Bergman contacts Richard Scruggs, an attorney representing Mississippi in a lawsuit against the tobacco industry. Bergman suggests that deposing Wigand could nullify his confidentiality agreement, providing CBS with the opportunity to broadcast the information. Scruggs shows interest.
Soon after, Wigand receives an emailed death threat and finds a bullet in his mailbox. He contacts the FBI, but the agents who respond are hostile and confiscate his computer. Enraged, Wigand demands that Bergman arrange an interview, during which he reveals that he was fired after objecting to Brown & Williamson’s practice of making cigarettes more addictive.
Bergman arranges security for Wigand’s home as marital tensions rise in the Wigand family. Despite a gag order and objections from Brown & Williamson lawyers, Wigand testifies in Mississippi.
